EML
Outlook Express Electronic Mail (EML) files are one of the most common e-mail message format used by several e-mail clients. These file extensions are primarily used for e-mail files that are created using RFC standard and contain email messages, attachments or files sent with the email. Outlook Express views and sends EML messages as SMTP/MIME messages. To view an EML file in Internet Exploree, you will need to convert it in MHT format.
MBX
Mailbox (MBX) files are the files that contain Outlook Express e-mail messages, actual data, which may be backed up by copying the mailbox files to a different folder. These Outlook Express 4 files perform analogous tasks as DBX files do in their later versions. The only difference being that Outlook Express uses separate file for each mailbox folder when saved as DBX files. Thus, the files of Outlook Express 4.x are Inbox.dbx, Sent Items.mbx etc.

For instance, Inbox.dbx is the file containing messages of Inbox folder. All the files are consisted in a single root folder called Store Folder. Also known as Store Root, it is the hidden folder comprising of DBX files together with local IMAP and Hotmail messages and folders.
